Christmas Lights

Barnsley have had their big switch on of annual Christmas lights, now it’s your turn to get festive.

Christmas lights are beautiful but all that electricity can cause problems if not used properly.

Christmas lights can get hot enough to burn or ignite other decorations. The cords can fray, leading to a short.

Our advice here at A Coole Electrical is

Choose Christmas lights that have been tested and deemed safe by a reputable testing body

Try to use the cooler-burning “mini” Christmas lights as opposed to the traditional larger bulbs. The older style burns much hotter.

Only use Christmas lights that have fuses in the plugs.

Inspect each set of  Christmas lights – old or new – for damage. Return or throw out any set with cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections.

Replace burned out bulbs promptly with bulbs of the same wattage.

Never hang Christmas  lights on a metal tree. The tree can become charged with electricity and shock someone.

Want Christmas lights outdoors? Use outdoor Christmas lights. The packaging will note whether the lights can be used indoors, outdoors, or both.

All outdoor electrical  decorations should be plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter  (GFCI). You can buy portable units for outdoor use, or you can have them      permanently installed by A Coole Electrical.

Use extension leads properly. Outdoor cords can be used inside or outside. Do not overload  extension. They can get hot enough to burn.

Stay away from power lines (these go from the pole to the house).

Secure outside Christmas lights with insulated holders (never use tacks or nails) or run strings of  lights through hooks.

When you leave or go to  bed at night, turn off your Christmas lights.

Never pull on a string of  Christmas lights, it stresses the cords and can lead to fraying. Store Christmas lights loosely wrapped for the same reason.

A Coole Electrical want you all to have a safe Christmas.

Dangers of Electricity

Any form of energy, when not properly controlled or harnessed, can result in serious danger to those who use it. The risks with electric power can generally be divided into two categories: direct and indirect.

The direct danger is the damage that the power itself can do to the human body, such as stopping you breathing or regular heartbeats, or burns.

The indirect dangers of electricity include the damages that can result to the human body as a result of something caused by electric shock, such as a fall, an explosion, or a fire.

Electricity at any voltage can be dangerous and should always be approached with caution. An electric shock can occur upon contact of a human with any source of voltage high enough to cause sufficient current flow through the muscles or nerves.

The best way to avoid electric shocks in the home is to have your circuit’s tested by a qualified electrician.  Never tamper with the electrics in your house, leave it to the experts A Coole Electrical

Testing & Inspections in South Yorkshire

Testing & Inspections in South Yorkshire

Regular electrical testing and inspections can help prevent fire in your home or workplace and can potentially save lives.

A Coole Electrical can carry out an inspection of your electrical installation and provide you with an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report)

If you are a landlord we can provide you with a landlord certificate confirming that the property for which you are responsible is safe for habitation.

For commercial properties and properties with public access it is mandatory that a periodic EICR is obtained.

Visual inspections:

A Coole Electrical will carry out a survey of the electrical installation prior to commencing any electrical testing. This visual inspection will highlight any defects including cracked devices, incorrect installations, faulty wiring etc.

PAT testing:

PAT (portable appliance testing) is a vital part of health & safety in the workplace. This  is electrical equipment such as kettles, fans and computers which may be used in the workplace.

HSE guidance notes advise “regular testing” – generally regarded as annual testing.

If you rent out a property then PAT testing is mandatory to ensure that your property is safe for habitation

A Coole Electrical will be pleased to carry out this testing for you and provide a landlord certificate.

Reducing energy use makes perfect business sense

As you know last week the clocks went back and the days got shorter, this creates the demand for artificial lighting within commercial properties.

Whilst it’s accepted that more lighting is required throughout the darker days, wasted energy is still a huge issue that needs to be tackled throughout the UK. The correct lighting in the workplace is essential and improves the alertness and accuracy of those working in it

In a recent survey it was found that 60% of us leave lights on when not in the room! That’s a shocking statistic.

Although the biggest excuse for this is to ward off intruders one in 8 just said they just forgot!

Lighting is one of the biggest users of electricity in the workplace so why not up grade

If you do need to leave the lights on, make sure you switch to energy-efficient LED lighting

Or fit motion sensors to your lights so they turn off when no one is in the room
